Many seasons after the deaths of the Three and their great-great-grandkits, the four Clans were led by new leaders: ThunderClan was led by Brightstar, RiverClan by Troutstar, WindClan by Breezestar, and ShadowClan by Deepstar. Things started happening; cats began to think themselves above the warrior code. Cats murdered and lorded over others. They would abandon kits and throw their elders out when they were too old to contribute. Few cats cared for one another. They began to believe that they were better off on their own, or that one Clan should lead all four.
Deepstar led ShadowClan in an attack against the other three Clans, attempting to drive them away or make them surrender. The once-proud ThunderClan was the first to submit, overrun by ShadowClan and the rogues they'd procured for the task. RiverClan came next. Most of WindClan was slaughtered, but some managed to escape, along with refugees from other Clans who refused to accept Deepstar's rule. Breezestar was among the dead. The last words he heard were, "The system just doesn't work anymore, fool. Give it up already." Deepstar took the other leader's last five lives in one stroke, Breezestar's will to live gone.
Even ShadowClan fell apart, leaving the cats of the former Clans as rogues who traveled alone or in groups of two or three. Eventually, the knowledge of the Clans and StarClan was lost but for the descendants of the cats who had escaped Deepstar's massacre. There are only a pawful of these cats left. The remainder are either part of a group of ruthless murderers without a name, or part of the Red Death, who believe themselves to be the only 'real' cats.
The group with no name is often called Nameless. Not much about them is known by the outside, but the leader shifts constantly and the cats in the group are always changing. They kill each other and anyone in their territory, which, according to them, is the entire lake and the surrounding land. Recruits are infrequently admitted, due to a lack of trust within the core of the group.
The Red Death has more set rules, but there are certain cats who will look the other way when a murder is committed. They believe all cats not in the Red Death to be inferior, and any deserter is murdered. They are mostly made of unwitting descendants of Clan members. The leader is chosen through lineage: therefore, the leader (always a male) must have a son as soon as possible so someone will be there to take his place. The family line can be traced back to Deepstar, although no cat remembers back that far. Like the Nameless, they believe that the entire forest belongs to them. They will take recruits, but only if they can prove that they are worthy.
There are cats who aren't part of either group, but these are few and far between. They hide anywhere they can, and must constantly keep on guard for Red Death and Nameless patrols. These are the cats who still carry vague knowledge of StarClan.
Things are getting worse as the death toll rises. A cat from the Nameless, the Red Death, and the independent population gets a dream from cats that have been long dead. At first, they don't believe, but with some persuasion, they come upon a pool surrounded by rocks. There are pawsprints imprinted here, faded and ancient pawsteps of cats bygone. They have to find a way to work together to regain what they have lost, but without any guidance from StarClan. In the words of Thunderstar:
Now it's up to the three chosen cats and the faded pawsteps they follow to reform their lives before the death toll rises too high--join the quest and solve the mystery today.
